Following is a partial and constantly evolving list of obstacles to the advancement of innovation.  We need input from others so please help by letting us know about missing or inaccurate information.  Please report obstacles and suggest solutions to problems.  This review examines obstacles currently impeding the advancement of innovation (and the growth of our economy and the betterment of humanity) at the six different layers of innovation outlined elsewhere on this site.  We have purposefully excluded the creation and development of innovation inside of big companies.

Layer One (the innovation layer) – Garages, Universities and Government Labs

  • Intellectual Property protection
  • Issues relating to University tech transfer operations
  • Sources of “Gap” funding
  • Government funding for R&D

Layer Two (the business formation layer) — Incubators, Angels and Seed Funds

  • Links from Angels to VCs
  • Paucity of true seed funds

Layer Three (the business building layer) — Traditional Venture Capital

  • Education
  • Immigration

Layer Four (the expansion layer) — M&A or IPO

  • Sarbanes-Oxley

Layer Five (the benefits layer) — GDP Growth, Prosperity and Quality of Life

Layer Six (the horizontal layer) — Application to developing countries
